Christmas is well behind us and Miri is now gearing up for the next big celebration, Chinese New Year. In order to welcome the Year of the Rat in auspicious fashion the Chinese shops have replaced their displays of Christmas decorations with fantastic displays of lanterns, garlands, good luck scripts etc. Red and Gold seem to be the dominant colours, red being particularly prevalent in its role as the colour which fends off evil spirits.
