Al Maha Desert Resort

Howard did the booking and I knew nothing of where we were going for our 30th wedding anniversary. I knew we couldn’t leave the country as my passport was still with the UAE authorities. So where were we going when we headed off into the Dubai desert? Well we were going to a desert resort in the middle of a conservation area. The main attraction is a 300 strong herd of oryx. Oryx wandered freely around our rooms – making a walk to the hotel a bit tricky – especially if there were agitated oryx mothers around. We had a camel ride to a champagne sunset (well we did it once – took a lift in a land cruiser the rest of the time!). Falconry in the early morning – 5.30am – too hot for the birds otherwise! Some tremendous sand driving by our field guide Jorg. And lots of interesting wildlife.

Fabulous accommodation in “tents” with our own pool looking out to the desert. Meals were all provided and we had our anniversary dinner on the restaurant veranda.
