After a very brief couple of nights and a game of golf (!) we keft the Dicksons and headed south with plans to explore the Keys and the Everglades. Our first overnight stop was Fort Lauderdale, having travelled down the East coast from Davenport to Fort Pierce. Our first stop was on Hutchison Island, and from there we drove down the coast towards Palm Beach. Lunch there was in a great little cafe ticked away about one block from Worth Avenue, which is absolutely packed with high end stores. Palm Beach is an incredibly wealthy place, enormous houses and lots of Maseratis, Bentleys and Rolls Royce on the roads.
We then moseyed on down the coast to Fort Lauderdale, known as the Venice of America, quite an incredible place with lots of house on the waterways, many of which had beautiful boats moored alongside. Again no shortage of money here. We stayed in a Courtyard Marriott right on the sea. Unseasonably chilly late afternoon when we walked out on the pool deck to look over the beach and catch the last rays of the sun. A friendly guy in the bistro in the hotel gave us a pint glass of milk when we tried to buy milk from him. Dinner was at the Coconuts, just across the road from the hotel. Great seafood place with a really lively atmosphere.
