We breakfasted in the room then set off (picking up our car from the valet which cost us $42!!!) and then explored a bit of Fort Lauderdale on our way out of the city. Essentially it is one big conurbation from Fort Lauderdale down through Hollywood into Miami. We parked in Miami Beach and spent an hour exploring. It could be a fun place to be based for a couple of day, with a nice beach, shops, restaurants/bars etc.
I was keen to get to Cocoanut Grove which she had read about in the guidebook. It is an old laid back, hippie haunt. Initially disappointed we stumbled on a vegetarian/vegan market, very similar to the Sunday Stockbridge market. It only happens on a Saturday and we enjoyed looking at the stalls, sampling some Indonesian vegan food and sampling some vegan nondairy ice cream, the creaminess comes from nuts. It was all good.
We then drove down to the start of the Keys and stayed at the Seafarer Resort on Key Largo. A basic but nice and friendly little place. Kay sat down at the seafront waiting for sunset but unfortunately the day stayed cloudy.
There are two local options for dinner. We choose the cheap and cheerful option - Dennys. It was certainly cheap but the food was dire!
