Day 4 Tarbert to Dalmor

Wow, what a day! The toughest by far,  despite not being the longest mileage. The total distance was 46 miles, but the last half was straight into a 35 miles an hour wind. So tough was it that Howard ran out of battery with 4 miles to go. And these are heavy bikes to get up a hill without a battery! However it was still a great days cycling:

We had a very nice breakfast at our B and B with a most fantastic view. It had stopped raining thank goodness as it had been heavy overnight.

We were on the road just before 9 expecting rain and wind. But it was dry and the wind wasn’t bad at this point. We had an extremely long and tough section right at the start - see the profile - but we were rewarded by great views at the top.

We chatted to a Norfolk couple who  were travelling Lewis and Harris in a car. We will do that next time! North Harris is vey mountainous and we enjoyed winding through the valleys and eventually into Lewis. There were a few small communities that we passed through and we also stopped at a Bonnie Prince Charlie monument.

Then the showers started to arrive so we found an entirely different method of entertainment - bus shelters! And thank goodness for them. For once a shower hit is was awful. Rain so hard it felt like hail and it was difficult to see or keep the bike straight. So 3 bus shelters and a sheep shed were our  places of succour!

We arrived at Hilary and Ian’s about 3.45, had a great late lunch of lentil soup and cheese sandwiches, had a rest in our bed in their beautiful house and later got up for a cup of tea and snacks, and then a G and T in the hot tub. What a life! Later was dinner and bed, badly needed!
