The Journey to Barra

An interesting day! Things didn’t go quite as we hoped but we are in Barra, in the hotel. It’s grey and raining but we are here!

Here’s what we are travelling with for the next 10 days…

Up early, breakfasted and readied the house for our departure. Caught the 9.55 bus with loads of time to spare. A slight worry about catching the Glasgow bus in Edinburgh as it is Cup Final day and the bus queue was busy! However bus finally turned up, we squeezed on with our panniers and off we went. Changed buses in Glasgow for the airport and about 3 hours after we left home we arrived. Delayed checkin, no access to the lounge-way too busy, and a mobbed airport. However we did meet Karen and Angus McCoss who WERE getting into the lounge! We must make a date to see them soon!

There was another delay getting on our Loganair plane as they were worried about weight and also asking for a volunteer to delay a day to let someone else on! Then a delay ON the flight as they were worried about battery power. Finally we took off into a  grey day with no visibility as we crossed the sea.

BUT plenty of visibility when we landed. Landing on the sand was amazing!

Dan the taxi man was there to meet us, just as the rain started, and a very comfortable ride to the Castlebay Hotel.

We checked in with no problems, got this blog started and then headed for the pub next door. Full of young folk and quite a buzz. Quite a basic pub but the beer and wine were good, and the folk friendly. Back to the hotel for dinner at 8. Quite a nice dinner of….. chicken stuffed with haggis and steak and ale pie. The same fare we were offered at almost every hotel when we walked the West Highland Way! About 8 years ago. Let’s see if the Outer Hebrides does the same!
