Seville - Day 36

Our first full day in Seville. After a great breakfast in the hotel we headed off to the Cathedral and were able to get in shortly after it opened at 10.45 AM. The building and its decoration are as spectacular as we remembered from 5 years ago although it still raises the presbyterian hackles to see such profligacy.

The Chapter House

The ‘best carving in ….?’ Good, but that good!

Christopher Columbus’s tomb - his body has travelled almost as much as he had!

The High Altar

The Choir and the 2 organs

The Sacristy

The Giralda tower (originally a minaret since the cathedral was built on top of a mosque) was busy but still worth the 34 ramps (instead of stairs - so that the imam could get up up the tower 5 times a day on horseback k!) to get to the viewing level at the bells.  Fantastic views of the city from the top..

After a lunch of empanados we had a grand plan to try out electric scooters in the park at Plaza de Espana but there were none left so we made our various ways back to the hotel for a chill, as it was very hot. I personally took a small detour via the river and found these…

The Tower of Gold and the Lipstick!
Note: buildings are not allowed to be higher than the Girald in Seville but this tower is built across the river. It has a 5 star hotel and offices and would appear to be universally disliked in Seville. Its top looks like a lipstick…

A réplica of one of Columbus’s boats. They are so small…

The evening started with drinks on the roof terrace of the hotel at 6.30……

…. then we went on a Secret Food tour with Elio, visiting 5 different establishments and sampling churros, croquettes & ensaladilla, a lesson on the different types of Iberico, mushrooms & aoili, followed by  pork kebabs and then finally in our 5th establishment, having pork cheek, aubergine chips & chickpeas with spinach. A great night and lots of information about Seville.

Our very informative session on ibérico hams

Elio our guide with pork kebabs. Great guy and very interesting mix of food.

The last venue put a little bit of a downer for our last food venue, as there was an old video playing of a bullfight, on the tv immediately above our heads. Seville is still in love with its bullfights and the very graphic nature not only confirmed for us that this is a barbaric sport, but put us off our food as well.

A quick pit stop for a final vino - needed of course! - on the way home and then straight to bed.
