Exploratorium and Night Bus

Today dawned foggy and dull so Museum Day! A walk down through the Finacial District showed us the upmarket side of San Francisco, however still with Farmers Market and lovely coffee shops.

Our destination was Exploratorium, the hands on science museum on the waterfront. The real draw was Dutchman Theo Jansen's Strandbeest, on their first time on exhibition in the US. The Strandbeest were amazing, but the exhibits were fascinating as well. With lunch there we emerged at 4.30pm - unheard of for me to be in a museum so long! There's a short video here of the movement, but rather like animals in a zoo it is much better to see these animals in the wild so do look for them on YouTube. The other notable exhibit was the creation made from toothpicks!  After a stroll down to Fishersmans wharf and a burger at Wipeout surf bar we joined the Big bus Night tour, a whistle stop romp around the streets of San Francisco, and over the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island (an artificial island built to support a possible sea plane airport that never happened, and yes RS Stevenson did live here for a while, hence they named the island for him). Rather a grim place now, although they have plans to build houses there, but it did afford the most fantastic views of night time San Francisco
