San Diego

We left early Thursday morning for the long and ultimately tiring drive to San Diego. Howard did it all which was too much, especially the last few hours on the Freeway. A concrete surface, etched to stop it being slippy, meant it was bumpy and noisy, and with 4 lanes and everybody allowed to pass on either side, it was pretty hairy. We left around 9 and arrived San Diego 3.30pm.However we had had some fun along the way with bikers (video to follow) and road signs....

We had an afternoon and a day in San Diego. Our (extremely reasonable and nice Comfort Inn) hotel was in the Gaslamp District, so close to the water, so I'm afraid we never got away from it! A stroll down to the Marina in the late afternoon, a drink while the sun set got us over the shakes from the drive. Today we got up and headed for the number one thing to do in San Diego...go and visit the USS Midway, in its time the biggest ship in the world. She now lies tied up in the harbour and is a huge museum. We were able to wander everywhere ourselves with a great audio tour, hearing from the men who served in her. There were also volunteer vets. who showed us around, gave talks and explanations. James - Howard and I both thought you would have loved it. A really super few hours...

Top Gun..
We then wandered off the Big Boat and got on the Little Boat - the ferry to Coronado. Although connected by a spit of land and a bridge to the mainland the nicest way to get there is by ferry, also giving great views of San Diego.

The plan when we landed was to walk across to the Pacific side of the 'island'. What we'd heard was that Coronado went at a slower pace, and sure enough, our first coffee stop was a 50's diner, complete with old fashioned juke box, and the ability to make our own choice at the counter. Coffee and homemade pecan pie was the order of the day.

THEN we wandered down to the real start of the show, the Hotel Del Coronado. This old hotel is something special - and what Disneys Grand Floridian is based on. And it is where Some Like it Hot was filmed. The film plays constantly in the shop.....so I took a photo of Tony Curtis and tired to match it..
Mmmmmm...and then the beach..
Same headland!
Anyway we had a great time. Drinks in the beach bar and a wander around this lovely old hotel...

Then back on the ferry to SanDiego
And out for dinner to Dicks Last Resort where all the customers get abuse headed on them....
...it's just as well you can't read mine!
