Great day in Reims despite the dreich day, and rain later. Our initial destination was the cathedral but along the way we found some lovely status and fountains plus an antique 2 level carousel which was operating.
The cathedral inside was even more spectacular than the exterior. Impressive vistas of gothic arches and columns, an enormous pipe organ and a rather large clock which struck 12 noon whilst we were inside. The cathedral and much of the surrounding area had suffered extensive damage during the First World War but the restoration is practically invisible. The photos do NOT do it justiceIn the pm we walked to Pommery where we had booked a tour of the cellars. The tour itself was excellent, a good guide who was very informative, the part of the 18km of tunnels which we saw plus the old Roman chalk pits were fantastic and it was all topped off by a temporary art exhibition which we loved ( giant green wellies, Sand version of Picasso’s Guernica etc ). When the tour ended we enjoyed a glass of Pommery Brut Royal.
