Day 14 Wed 10/5/17
The day dawned beautifully clear and stayed that way thank goodness!
View from our balcony early
We walked down to Interlaken and across to the funicular for Harderkulm. This is a 109 year old funicular which takes one above to town where there are spectacular views across the Thunersee and Brienzersee all of which is set below the magnificence of the Jungfrau, Monsch and Eiger. Truly stunning views.
The Viewing Platform
We did a ridge walk and enjoyed a picnic lunch on the Trail. Then, on arrival back at the restaurant, we decided that the sun was over the yardarm so had a beer whilst continuing to soak in the views ( and the sun’s rays ).
Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau
Back down in town we walked along the river Aare, which links the two lakes, to Bonigen on the shores of the Brienzersee.
Having decided that we had done enough walking for a while we caught the town bus back to Interlaken and chilled with a beef at the Latinos café which we found the previous night.
For dinner we went to a small restaurant just over the bridge from the hotel. The restaurant is across the road from the Rugenbrau brewery thus it stocked their beers, and very nice it was too. We both had a German speciality, Schweinehaxe or pig’s knuckle, with potatoes and salad. Neither of us were able to finish it. The staff were lovely and made us feel very welcome even though we were the only non-Swiss customers.
We were in a quandary about tomorrow - our original plan to go to North Italy didn’t seem too good given the forecast of heavy rain but, as we researched our other options, we realised that the rain was widespread and we would just have to suck it up. So we are heading to Alessandria in Piedmont, and hopefully onwards to a drier and warm South of France.
