A day in Scalea - Day 16

A lovely, lazy day in Scalea. A beautiful breakfast on the terrace, served by by Victorio, then a stroll down the very steep hill to the beach for a swim there. The beach is stony but not uncomfortable and we swam at the free beach ie no umbrellas or seats. There are black rocks in the water which gave some interest to the swim. The temperature was very very pleasant. Once we’d dried off we went up and had a coffee in one of the very nice beach cafes.

Our villa, from the beach. It’s a long way up!

Afterwards we wandered up into the historical old town and then had an ice cream at one of the cafes in town. Then we walked back up that very steep hill to our villa and spent the next couple of hours having lunch and enjoying the pool. We had it all to ourselves.

We can see Mount Etna - 150 miles away - from the terrace

The was also a bit of excitement as this helicopter came over 3 times picking up water from the sea - wild fire somewhere, or practicing?

We hid from the heat and mossies at the end of the afternoon but we went out to dinner back in the old town, at Restaurant Atari as recommended by Vittorio.

We decided, given the weather forecast , to stay a third night here and then head on Thursday back to the east coast before heading to Rome at the weekend. There would appear to be an extremely wet couple of days coming, which we hope the east will be sheltered from
