We decided to stay another day it is so nice here. So, another lovely breakfast by the pool, and then a shortish drive along the beach southwards and then up a very steep and windy road to Grisolia, the hilltop town we could see lit up last night. It’s an old town with almost no new developments, and full of steep streets and steps. Wonderful to explore but a nightmare for the old or disabled. And somewhat impoverished I would say. No tourist development whatsoever. So then, the church was a complete surprise - beautifully decorated.
From there we wandered back towards the car and had a coffee in the main square - the only cafe we could see really. There was a fish pond right beside it - a communal project I was told.
From Grisola we headed back to the beach we were at yesterday (on the way getting the cheapest diesel we have seen so far on this trip - 176.9) with the black rocks, for just a brief swim to cool off and a chat to the British family we had seen there yesterday. His father has bought a doer upper apartment here for 25,000 euros so they are out for a holiday with him. We got a little insight into Scalea - it had suffered from Russian money laundering, and now, possibly released from that grip it may now break free but is also missing the Russian spend. We hear the mafia operates here too. So a gem for us holiday makers but perhaps this explains the lack of a big tourist development.
A lazy afternoon spend in the cool -Howard - and by the pool -me. What’s not to like?!
