We were up early and off by 9.10 having had breakfast outside again, but it was already 31 degrees. Top down while we could we headed the 30 kms to Alberobello, the centre of the Trulli houses, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape is covered in them, and there is an area in town that is only Trulli houses. Their origins are uncertain but agricultural in some way. Some of the houses now of course are tourist shops, but many are lived in, and some can be rented as holiday homes.
Then we headed to Locorotondo, which is reputedly the most beautiful village in Italy. Once again one has to head to the Centre Storico to find the pretty bits! And indeed it is indeed a lovely centre. We had a coffee in the shade and bought some cheese from the market that was in full swing. None of our photos seem to do the village justice!
On again we headed for Ostuni, the White City. A bigger town but again a Centre Storico. There were many many stairs this time - a nightmare for the elderly or disabled. However an interesting centre. A bride, her photographer, her car and guests were evident in the old centre. We wandered on and found the perfect spot for lunch - a Menu Turístico for 18 euros, in the shade. Very very good.
Back to the car and we headed for Lecce and our host Francesco who introduced us to the flat and parking. We will be here for 3 nights. We were disappointed to find our flat had no external window, only the classic internal one. Mmm not happy but let it pass.
After some recovery time we headed out at dusk to explore Lecce. What we found was a really beautiful city which we will explore more of tomorrow. In the meantime time we did a bit of bar cruising checking out the beers and wines and prices. Eventually we had a beer and wine with an aperitivo - some nibbles - and then wandered home via a rock/orchestra concert in the park.
