Dormagen to Bingen - Day 4

We left the hotel at 9.05 heading for Koblenz, on non motorway roads. This took us right through the heart of Cologne and close to the Rhine. Apart from the spectacular Cathedral and the lovely weather - 19 degs- there wasn’t too much to see. South of the city there were more chemical works so we are indeed in the industrial heart of Germany.

The only decent photo I got of Cologne Cathedral  from the car!

Soon after we left Cologne things became quieter and prettier. We crossed the Rhine to the east side at Bonn. We stopped for coffee and a break at a very pretty village called Linz.

The Rhine water levels were incredibly low after the lack of rain this summer

I took over driving after that, which quite easy really. The GPS took us back again to the west back of the river by car ferry at Boppard which was a bit of a break and fun. 6.50 euros for the car and us.

A random set of castle photos Howard took from the car

We stopped very briefly at the Loreli which is just a big cliff with a history(!) and stopped again for fuel at Oberwesel. 2.099 per litre - ouch. We stopped again briefly at Pfalzgrafenstein castle, on an island in the river, and then a much longer picnic lunch stop at Bacharach, with a nice park and view of the boats plying up and down.

On then to Bingen where we are stopping for the night. Booked an expensive room with balcony overlooking the river, but balcony, view or room didn’t quite cut it! However a nice walk along the riverside, a nice view of Rudesheim where we have been before, a few drinks and dinner and we were back on track!

115 miles from Dormegan to Bingen, top down, no motorways all the way. A bit sun blasted.

Daily drive 115 miles

Total trip 778 miles
