We left our lovely little apartment in Pescara at 8.85 after a very chilly breakfast on the balcony - sunny but cold - autumn is on its way. Mind you it was still 20 degs or so! We had a fantastic drive through the Apennine’s to Rome - mostly quiet motorway - with some stunning scenery yet again. The temperature gauge in the car did drop as low as 13.5 degs (our highest has been 37.5 in the car) but we were very cosy - top down and the heater on!
We arrived at the Ibis Aurelia - just outside Rome - before 11.30, and were able to check in which was fantastic! Got ourselves unpacked and sorted and even had a little picnic lunch before heading into town. The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the Metro.
Once in the city we headed for the Trevi Fountain - last there 25 years ago, in October, staying with the Steeles, and we expected more people but a sunny Sunday in September - wow! The tiny square was packed! Never mind I was still able to toss 4 coins in, one for each of us!
Then onwards to the Colosseum- the one thing we did not manage to see the last time we were here. A stroll around the Forum, marvelling at the further excavations and reconstruction they are managing to do, and onwards to the Colosseum. Only to find tickets could only be bought online, and we could only get a slot booked tomorrow.
So then a stroll back through the streets, a visit to a church (a must of course) and a small restaurant next to the Pantheon for drinks (booked there for dinner) before wandering across the river to the Vatican. Then our most expensive coffees to date - 14 euros for 2!
Total trip 2788 miles
